FAQ

Asphalt is a great choice because it’s affordable, durable, and gives your property a smooth, sleek look. It’s especially perfect for colder climates since it can handle freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or breaking down.

With the right installation and care, asphalt can last anywhere from 20 to 40 years! Things like soil quality, traffic, and the climate can all affect how long it holds up, but with regular maintenance, you’ll get plenty of use out of it.

For most residential driveways, we recommend 2.5 to 3 inches of well-compacted asphalt. If you’re in an area with sandy soil, we might suggest 4 to 5 inches, and for clay soil, 6 to 8 inches. At Kickin’ Asphalt, we use Class #5—a mix of recycled asphalt and concrete—to make sure you get a strong, lasting base.

The warmer months—spring through early fall—are the best time for installation. This helps the asphalt cure and set properly, so it’s smooth and durable for years to come.

Our Kickin’ Asphalt crew will remove the existing driveway. After that, we’ll install a Recycled Class #5 base. We like to let the base settle for about a week, though it can vary depending on weather and soil conditions. If the subsoil is soft or really saturated, we might let it settle for an extra 1-2 weeks to make sure it’s solid. Don’t worry, during this time, you can still drive and park on the driveway as usual. Once the base is all set, we’ll come back to install the asphalt.

After installation, we recommend keeping traffic off the driveway for 2-3 days and avoiding parking on it for about a week. Keep in mind that asphalt takes about 2 years to fully cure, so proper use and care are key to keeping your new driveway in great shape.

It’s pretty simple! Sweep away debris with a stiff broom, rinse it down with water, and deal with any spills quickly using a mild detergent. To prevent cracking in winter, fill any gaps before the cold weather hits. We also suggest sealcoating every 3 years to keep your driveway looking good and protected from the elements.

Yes, cracking is inevitable. When the ground goes through freeze-thaw cycles, it causes expansion and contraction, which leads to surface cracks. These cracks aren’t a sign that your driveway was installed incorrectly. They can also happen due to edges that aren’t properly reinforced, the pressure from everyday use and traffic, or even natural elements like tree roots.
